      Frequently Asked Questions

You must have an Offer of Place from an approved New Zealand education provider.

You need to demonstrate sufficient funds for:

      • Tuition fees, or proof of a scholarship.
      • Living expenses of at least NZ$20,000 for each year of study (or an acceptable sponsor).

You must have full medical and travel insurance for your stay, meet health and character requirements, and show a return ticket (or funds to purchase one).

New Zealand student visa processing times typically range from 30 to 45 working days (4 to 9 weeks). Some sources indicate an aim of 4 to 6 weeks.

It is highly recommended to apply at least 3 to 6 months before your course starts to account for potential delays, especially during peak intake seasons, or if additional documentation is requested.

Yes, eligible tertiary students are permitted to work:

      • During Term Time: Up to 25 hours per week part-time. (Note: This is an increase from the previous 20 hours/week, effective from 3 November 2025).
      • During Scheduled Breaks/Holidays: Full-time (40 hours per week).

This applies to most full-time tertiary students and those in approved exchange or study abroad programmes.

The Post-Study Work Visa (PSWV) allows eligible graduates to stay and work in New Zealand after completing their studies. This visa can last for 1 to 3 years, depending on the level of qualification.

      • Level 7 Degree or Higher (e.g., Bachelor, Master's, PhD): Typically an "Open" work visa (work for any employer) for up to 3 years.
      • Non-degree Level 7 or Lower: The duration and conditions may vary, often requiring the job to be related to the field of study.

You can only hold this visa once.

Your Post-Study Work Visa is the first step. The main pathways to a Resident Visa are through skilled employment categories:

      • Skilled Migrant Category (SMC): A points-based system that assesses factors like age, qualifications, work experience, and skilled employment in New Zealand. Gaining work experience on a PSWV boosts your points.
      • Green List Residence Pathway: For certain high-demand, skilled roles. This can offer a faster route to residency.
      • Work to Residence: Certain work visas are a direct pathway to residency after 2 years of skilled employment.

You first obtain a Resident Visa. After holding a Resident Visa for at least two years and meeting all conditions (including demonstrating commitment to New Zealand), you can apply for a Permanent Resident Visa.
