    Duolingo English Test Syllabus

    The Duolingo English Test (DET) is a modern, computer-adaptive language proficiency exam designed to assess real-world English communication skills. Unlike traditional exams, it combines question types across Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing in a single, streamlined 1-hour test. All tasks are integrated, meaning multiple skills are tested simultaneously through interactive questions.

      Reading and Listening Skills

      These skills are tested through adaptive, integrated questions that evaluate comprehension, grammar awareness, and contextual understanding.

      Common Tasks Include:

      • Read and Complete: Fill in missing words in a passage
      • Read and Select: Choose real English words from a list
      • Listen and Select: Identify real English words from audio
      • Listen and Type: Type what you hear in short audio clips

      Time Allocation: These questions appear throughout the 45-minute graded section. Question difficulty adjusts in real-time based on your answers.

      Writing Skills

      Writing is assessed through both short and long-form responses to evaluate grammar, vocabulary, coherence, and idea development.

      Writing Tasks:

      • Write About the Photo (1–2 sentences) Brief description of an image shown on screen.
      • Write a Passage (50+ words): Answer an open-ended question or describe a scenario in a few paragraphs.
      • Scoring Criteria Grammar, sentence structure, vocabulary usage, clarity, and coherence.

      Speaking Skills

      Speaking is tested via audio-recorded responses to prompts, with evaluation based on fluency, pronunciation, and accuracy.

      Speaking Tasks:

      Read Aloud

      Speak a sentence displayed on the screen

      Describe the Image

      Brief spoken description of a photo

      Speak About a Topic (30–90 seconds)

      Answer an open-ended question verbally after short preparation

      Note: No live examiner. Your responses are recorded and evaluated by AI and human proctors.

      Duolingo Adaptive Section

      This is the main 45-minute test where all question types appear. It’s adaptive, meaning if you answer correctly, the next question becomes harder; if incorrect, it becomes easier. This helps accurately determine your proficiency level.

      Duolingo Writing & Speaking Video Interview

      At the end of the adaptive test, you will complete:

      • Writing Sample: A short essay (3–5 minutes, ungraded but sent to institutions)
      • Video Interview: Choose 1 out of 2 prompts and speak for 1–3 minutes

      These samples are not scored but are included in your results for universities to review.

      Accents and Accessibility

      • The audio used in listening and speaking tasks includes a variety of English accents (American, British, etc.)

      • The test is available 24/7 and can be taken from home, making it one of the most accessible English tests globally.
